With the announcement of the 3DS, Nintendo has introduced gaming on-the-go in 3D – without the need for special glasses!

Similar to the rest of the DS family, the bottom screen on the 3DS is a touch screen that uses a stylus control. But the top display screen presents 3D visuals to the naked eye! That’s right, no need for 3D glasses!

The system utilizes a depth slider to allow players to select the level of 3D that suits them the best. The 3D effect can be cranked up to the highest level, scaled back to a moderate setting, or even turned off completely. The 3DS also includes a new control feature, called a “Circle Pad,” which provides a full 360 directional degrees, giving gamers the freedom and precision necessary to maneuver in 3D worlds.

Built-in motion sensor gyro sensors react to the motion and tilt of the system, so motion-compatible games for the Nintendo 3DS respond instantly to the player’s actions… twisting, tilting, bouncing, and more!

Physically, there are also some subtle changes found in the DSi. The console is a bit slimmer than the DS Lite, and it features noticeably improved speakers. One thing you may miss on the DSi is the GameBoy Advance game slot. This means that the DSi can not be used in a backward compatible manner to play games originally released for the GBA, or use accessories such as the Guitar Hero grip or the RumblePak. However, you can’t stop the wheels of progress, and time must march on. Even with the elimination of the GBA slot, I think you will find the new Nintendo DSi an outstanding upgrade.

The DS’s lithium-ion battery supports up to 10 hours of uninterrupted game time on a four-hour charge, and basic features such as calendar and schedular functions are built right into the firmware.

The Nintendo DS has quickly become a favorite, not just with the underage set, but with adults as well. And since the DS has additional capabilities, such as DVD movie and music playback, it will surely be enjoyed for years to come.

True to Nintendo tradition, graphics on the DSi remain playful and cartoon-like. It is compact, with no dramatic control changes from the DS Lite.
